Exercises That Can Help You Nurture Your Connections
(1) Three and Three. The purpose of this exercise is to help you and your partner identify opportunities for personal growth while also reflecting on what you appreciate about each other. In a quiet place, free from distractions, write down three things that you value about your partner and three things that could bring you closer together if they did differently – asking them to do the same. Then have an honest dialogue together about your answers.
(2) Prioritize Active Listening. It’s easy to get caught up in a conversation, interrupt the other person or maybe even finish their sentences. But, when you are more focused on what you’re going to say next, you’re not really concentrating on what your partner is trying to communicate. To work on being a better listener, pause before responding right away and give them your full attention.
(3) Stay Engaged. Ask Questions. The next time you talk to your friends and loved ones, make a point to ask them a question about what is going on in their life and make eye contact. They’ll appreciate your interest and these conversations can help to bring you closer together.
