Actively Investing in Your Relationships

If you’re like most people, you likely take the time periodically to consider your professional and financial goals and put together a plan for getting from A to B. After all, you can’t just leave your future up to chance, right? It’s important to take that same approach in your personal life too in order to cultivate new relationships and enrich the ones you already have.

Multiple studies have shown that people with close, personal relationships are more likely to live longer, less prone to depression and anxiety and report having greater satisfaction with life. And, those starting a new life, one free from drugs and alcohol, can also enjoy another powerful health benefit – having a reduced risk of relapse.

If you want to build a stronger relationship with a friend or loved one, there are exercises that you can do to improve your communication skills and grow closer together along the way.

Exercises That Can Help You Nurture Your Connections

(1) Three and Three. The purpose of this exercise is to help you and your partner identify opportunities for personal growth while also reflecting on what you appreciate about each other. In a quiet place, free from distractions, write down three things that you value about your partner and three things that could bring you closer together if they did differently – asking them to do the same. Then have an honest dialogue together about your answers.

(2) Prioritize Active Listening. It’s easy to get caught up in a conversation, interrupt the other person or maybe even finish their sentences. But, when you are more focused on what you’re going to say next, you’re not really concentrating on what your partner is trying to communicate. To work on being a better listener, pause before responding right away and give them your full attention.

(3) Stay Engaged. Ask Questions. The next time you talk to your friends and loved ones, make a point to ask them a question about what is going on in their life and make eye contact. They’ll appreciate your interest and these conversations can help to bring you closer together.
