Who Can Enroll in Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

Intensive outpatient treatment is designed for those who can’t attend inpatient treatment. These people in recovery may have job responsibilities they can’t forego for any length of time. They may be a caretaker for an elderly parent, or are attending a school. People who enroll in intensive outpatient treatment will need an extensive support system as they walk the early stages of sobriety. If a person needs detoxification, is at high risk for relapse, or has a complicated diagnosis, outpatient treatment will not be the right fit for them.

Intensive outpatient models include day treatment, which can be compared to the services and effectiveness of residential treatment. This will depend upon the needs and attributes of the individual. Many outpatient programs feature process groups, individual counselling sessions, drug and alcohol education, sober living strategies, self care and stress management programs. Other facilities approach rehabilitation from a holistic point of view. That is, the body, mind and spirit. Experiential programs such as yoga, mindfulness meditation, equine-assisted therapy and other physical activities are used in addition to regular therapies and treatment to further a participant’s recovery.

Just like inpatient treatment, the goals of intensive outpatient treatment programs are to treat the addiction in a safe environment and to give the patient the best possible tools and skills for living a healthy, productive clean and sober life. The staff, medical doctors and psychotherapist at these treatment centers are licensed and have had specialized education in addiction. Their job is to motivate you to change your behavior, and ensure you have systems in place to support your recovery when you leave each day. Your job is to motivate yourself, follow the rules, show up on time, have an open mind, learn, listen and grow.

Each person at an intensive outpatient treatment requires an individualized plan to address their needs. They must participate fully in their goals for treatment, because no one can sustain sobriety for them. Therefore, individuals who are highly motivated to stay clean and sober are better suited for outpatient treatment, than those who come to treatment as a result of an intervention.
