Thanksgiving, and any day, is the perfect time to get help for your addiction. Hotlines and call centers are open. Hospital emergency rooms are open. Yes, we did say emergency rooms. Your addiction is an emergency! Death rates are alarming, and we’re sure you don’t want to become a statistic.
Look online for local hotlines, and pick up the telephone. You are a good person who’s been caught in a terrible self-destructive web. Perhaps you’ve stolen money, or sold family valuables to get cash for drugs. How is that working for you? Not so good? We’re being direct with you because we want you to live. We want you to have the life you deserve. Call the hotline now.
You know how Thanksgiving is all about being grateful for what you have? If you’re addicted, you might not be feeling all that grateful. If you pick up the phone and call for help, you’ll have everything in which to be grateful—that is, your life!
Thanksgiving can be a huge challenge if you’ve already gotten clean from opioids. Being around family can bring up old and unhealed wounds, and perhaps send you off in a door-slamming fit of anger. You could blow the slightest incidence way out of proportion. Any excuse, both real or conjured could lead you out the door to find your old dealer.
You don’t have to put yourself at risk. Shore up your support system before Thanksgiving is upon you. Find out what plans others you know in recovery have for the holiday. Your family might be disappointed or get mad at you if you tell them you can’t make dinner this year. They may tug at your heart. Please be mindful and decide what’s best for you.
On Thanksgiving, some addicts in recovery choose to drop by the family for a quick hug and hello just to connect with loved ones. Then they are off to volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Volunteering and doing for others can bolster your self esteem. You’re also likely to meet some great new people on the same path as you.
“Peace comes from being aligned with the present moment. Wherever you are, you feel that you are home—because you are home.” -Eckhart Tolle
