There’s lots to learn in recovery. Early on we probably knew it wouldn’t be light winds and easy sailing. Emotional storms can come from nowhere, and it can be hard to find a safe harbor inside ourselves in which to secure an anchor. Take heart. Recovery is not all about hard times, dual diagnosis, intensive therapy and lists of people we’ve harmed. Though the harm we caused may have been rooted in the effects of addiction, we are still responsible for self reflection and making amends.
Just as reflection and education are pillars in recovery, joy needs to be an integral part of our lives, too. We may often feel we have to dig ourselves into a tunnel and hide away forever. Finding joy doesn’t have to be an illusive or impossible endeavor, or as something we don’t deserve. It takes a shift of mind and attitude, and a willingness to get out of your own way.
Joy flows from the same part of you as love—from your heart. If you’re having a hard time letting joy back in your life, think of the people in your life that your love. Would you want to deny them your love? Can you see that you don’t have to deny yourself joy either. Let it come in slowly and when confusion and sadness hits, allow yourself a good cry and consider getting the help of a therapist.
It has been said that joy is your power—a source of healing power. Joy can breakdown the iceberg in your heart if you are shut off or shut down. If you are angry, joy can disintegrate the spears you want to hurl. Here’s a brief list of things you can do to promote joy in your life.
Look up when you are walking, greet people with a smile, plant some flowers, play some music you love and dance to it, fake it until you make it, help a lost dog, sing, donate baked good to the library bake sale, help an elderly person, look up at the stars, and learn something new.
“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.”—Bernice Johnson Reagon
